KEY JOCKEYS SUSPENDED
THE stewards were busy this week with senior jockeys Amy Herrmann, Simon Price and Ben Claridge all outed for careless riding.
Herrmann was suspended for three meetings for her ride on Silver Illusion at Balaklava on Sunday, will begin her stint on the sidelines after tomorrow’s card at Morphettville and will be free to return the following Saturday.
Claridge copped a four-meeting suspension for his ride on Loncava at Gawler on Wednesday. He’ll also be out after tomorrow’s races.
Price will be on the sidelines for three race days after his ride on Sarcasm at the same meeting. He’ll be out of action after Sunday’s card at Murray Bridge.
TASMANIAN APPRENTICE COMING TO SA
TOP Tasmanian apprentice Sigrid Carr is moving to Adelaide this weekend for a three-month stint in South Australia.
The young hoop, who has already ridden 76 winners, will join the John Hyam team at Morphettville.
Carr has shown plenty of ability in her fledgling career, booting home Streetwise Savoire at the Launceston Cup meeting on Wednesday while picking up a double at Hobart on Sunday.
KAH’S FINAL SINGAPORE SLING
BOOM SA apprentice Jamie Kah finishes her stint in Singapore this weekend with four rides in both Friday night’s meeting and on Sunday.
Kah is keen to end her trip on a high and pick up a winner, having already spent two weekends riding at Kranji and collecting three thirds.
BROWN TAKES RIDE ON BARBIE
COREY Brown has been engaged to ride last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Miracles Of Life in Saturday’s Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m).
Trainer Daniel Clarken snapped up the hoop, who is making a flying visit from Singapore for the ride, when the mare’s regular jockey Lauren Stojakovic was unavailable.
She is on the comeback trail from injury, and as yet does not have a clearance to ride in races.
MURTAGH HANGS UP THE SADDLE
IRISH jockey Johnny Murtagh has announced his retirement from riding to concentrate on training.
Murtagh rode more than 100 Group 1 winners during his career and took out his training licence in May last year.
He rode Australian sprinter Choisir to a famous Royal Ascot double in the King’s Stand and Golden Jubilee in 2003 and partnered another Australian, Starspangledbanner, to wins in the 2010 Golden Jubilee and July Cup.
“The training side of things is getting bigger all the time and I wasn’t happy giving the riding 50 per cent and the training 50 per cent,’’ Murtagh told Press Association Sport.
Murtagh rode four Irish Derby winners and six Irish Oaks winners including Chicquita last year and also won the Epsom Derby three times.
He had a great affinity with Royal Ascot, taking the leading rider award at the summer showpiece meeting for a fifth time last year.
Murtagh was stable jockey at Aidan O’Brien’s powerful Ballydoyle operation between 2008 and 2010 then rode for the Aga Khan until August 2012.
